Plane Crash In Neighborhood

Category: Family | PhotographyJRBlack @ 14:18

On the evening of March 30, 2011, a small air plane lost it’s bearing in poor visibility and low cloud ceiling and crashed into a neighbors house up the street.

Moments before the crash, Kim took Caitlin to dance and I was home with the boys.  I was out back in the yard with Amber when I heard what sounded like a car crash or transformer blow.  Later inside the house a friend from outside the neighborhood called to see if we were OK, that they heard reports of an air plane crash in our neighborhood.  Parts of Sandy Ridge Rd were closed down and Gallimore Dairy Rd.  The area was marked off like a crime scene and Kim and Caitlin were unable to get home till much later in the evening with a police escort through the scene.

Although the pilot and passanger died in the crash, God blessed the familiy in that home and all survived without injury... though it was a close call by about 8 feet.

Below are a few pictures I took with my cell phone that evening.

Winter Jam 2011

Category: Family | Kids | SchoolJRBlack @ 07:56

Kim and I (and a few other adults) went to the Winter Jam 2011concert in Greensboro as chaperones with about 25 youth from our youth group.  Clearly this event has continued to grow in popularity since Kim and I last went in 2008.  Construction on 3 sides of the coliseum did not help to lessen the confusion and congestion getting to the event or inside the event.  Greensboro was a record breaking attendance at 23,000 attending and many more were turned away with no room and no seat.

This years performance included Chris Sligh (former American Idol contestant), Chris August (famous for the Candy Song), Sidewalk Prophets, KJ-52, Red, Francesca Battistelli, Kutless, David Crowder Band and Newsboys (with new lead singer Michael Tate).  Of course NewSong hosted the event with speaker Tony Nolan.

The last time we went to this event it was in 2008 with front row seats as the Winter Jam Supper Fan winners with radio station WBFJ.  So this was event was quite different for us.  We probably didn’t get there as early as we could have and it was more then a challenge to manage that many youth through the crowd, get good seat and not loose any.  Because of the construction, I believe they were using 2 or 3 different entrances and it was clear to us by the time we were able to look into the arena, that other doors were opened earlier… it looked to be 50% full already.

Well the youth seemed to really enjoy the concert and the different bands.  Below are a few pictures from the event.  Pick an image below and click on it.  Then you can advance next and previous through the rest of them.

Jeremy and I went to the Youth Pastor / Youth Leader meeting and got to meet a few of the band members.

Yes… the platform for NewsBoys drummer is raised, tilted and spinning…

Winter Wonder Slam 2011

Category: JRBlack @ 16:12

A friend of Collin’s, Marshal, celebrated his birthday by inviting Collin (and I) to join him at the Winter Wonder Slam 2011 concert featuring Skillet and TobyMac.  Collin, a fan of Skillet since I won WinterJam Super Fan from WBFJ (a few years back) and brought home their CD for him.  Skillet was… well… Skillet with exciting pyrotechnics and stage show.

TobyMac put on quite a nice show, considering it was the first time I was listening to about half of what he performed.  Towards the end of his set he came off the stage and walked up into the bleacher section and into the crowd.  You don’t see that often.  Difficult to compare the seats at any concert after the front row seats that one year at WinterJam, but we were close enough and I was able to take quite a few decent pictures.
